Our History

Syd H Owen started his career in photography at age 15 in 1933, working as a message boy for Kodak Toowoomba for $1 a week. He had no idea that within 28 years he would take over Black & White developing and printing for Kodak in the Darling Downs. Syd stayed at Kodak until 1949 when he purchased W.Bourke Village Photographics Studio. The studio, located at 416 Ruthven Street, opened as Owen Miniature Studio on August 1st, 1949.

Syd and Violet got married on February 13th, 1943 and had four children: Lynette, Ailsa, Elaine, and Syd Jr who all worked in the business. Over the years, Syd photographed many assignments. Having a Royal Press Pass and photographing Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1954 was probably one of his highlights. He also donated his time to the Carnival of Flowers for 50 years, being president in 1967, 68 & 69 and as their official photographer. He was also the local photographer for the police until the ’70s.

In the 60s, he opened three more successful studios in Dalby, Gatton, and Nambour, photographing local families.

Over the years, Syd and Violet attended many photographic courses around the world to bring back the latest updated techniques, making them leaders in the industry Australia-wide. Their dedicated service to the local community and the photographic industry is embedded in history for the betterment of those who have followed.

One of Syd’s famous sayings was “We Lead, Others Follow.”

Syd Snr passed away in October 1991.

In 1991, Syd Owen Jnr took over the reins of running a successful photography business that has continued to be respected and trusted in the community for 75 years. You may be interested to know that we still have the negatives of every portrait and wedding photographed since 1949. We still receive requests to print or scan these into digital format. If Owen Miniature Studio photographed your family, we may have the original negatives/digital files, which you can make an offer to purchase.
